Position Summary:
The Roofer and Shingler is responsible for installing, repairing, and maintaining roofing systems on residential, commercial, and industrial buildings. This includes applying a variety of roofing materials such as shingles, tiles, and waterproof coatings, as well as ensuring structural integrity and weatherproofing. Roofers and Shinglers play an essential role in protecting buildings from environmental elements while adhering to safety and quality standards.

Key Responsibilities

Roof Installation and Repairs
-
Install, repair, or replace built-up roofing systems using asphalt-saturated felts, hot asphalt, gravel, or other materials.

Install, repair, or replace shingles, shakes, baked clay, and other roofing tiles on sloped roofs.

Install single-ply roofing systems using waterproof sheet materials such as modified plastics and elastomeric compositions.

Install and repair metal roofs using hand and power tools.

Apply waterproof coatings to concrete or masonry surfaces above or below ground level.

Flashing and Structural Components

Install sheet metal flashings to prevent water penetration at roof intersections.

Set up and dismantle scaffolding, falsework, and working platforms to provide safe access to roofs.

Site Preparation and Cleanup

Mobilize job sites, including loading and unloading materials.
-
Strip and dispose of old roofing materials.
-
Perform job site cleanup and debris removal to maintain safety and efficiency.

Diagnostics and Maintenance

Conduct diagnostic investigations to identify leaks or damage and provide emergency repair services as needed.

Estimate materials and provide cost quotes for projects when required.

Skills and Qualifications

Experience
-
Experience in roofing or shingling is preferred but not mandatory; on-the-job training is available.

Proven ability to handle a variety of roofing systems and materials is an asset.

Technical Expertise
-
Proficiency in using hand and power tools for roofing applications.

Knowledge of waterproofing techniques and roofing system installations.
-
Familiarity with safety protocols, including fall protection and WHMIS training.

Physical and Interpersonal Skills

Physical stamina and ability to handle heavy loads (over 45 kg).

Comfortable working at heights and in outdoor environments under various weather conditions.

Strong teamwork, dependability, and communication skills.

Certification
-
Completion of a two- to three-year apprenticeship program or equivalent work experience is preferred.

Roofing trade certification or Red Seal endorsement is an asset but not required.

Fall Arrest Protection Training and WHMIS certification are required or must be obtained upon hiring.

Preferred Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent.

Transportation to job sites is an asset; foreman vehicles may be available to the crew.

Intermediate English language skills.

A valid driverβs license with a clean abstract for vehicle operation is preferred.
