Position Summary:
The Plasterer, Drywall Installer, Finisher, and Lather is responsible for constructing, installing, and finishing interior and exterior surfaces in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings. This role involves preparing surfaces, installing drywall and plaster systems, applying finishes, and creating decorative elements to meet project specifications. These professionals play an essential role in achieving high-quality and durable finishes in walls and ceilings.

Key Responsibilities

Plastering
-
Clean and prepare surfaces for plaster application.

Mix plaster to desired consistency and apply, level, and smooth coats using trowels, floats, brushes, or spraying equipment.

Trowel or spray stucco onto exterior surfaces to create weatherproof finishes.
-
Finish corners, angles, and create decorative designs in final coats as needed.
-
Mould and install ornamental plaster panels, cornices, and trims.
-
Spray acoustic materials or texture finishes on walls and ceilings.

Drywall Installation and Finishing
-
Measure, cut, and fit drywall sheets for walls and ceilings.
-
Position and secure sheets to metal or wooden studs or joists.
-
Install and cut metal corner beads to protect corners.
-
Tape over joints, embed tape in compound, and smooth excess compound.
-
Apply successive coats of compound, sand seams and joints, and allow coats to dry.
-
Fabricate and install suspended metal ceiling grids and place in panels to form acoustical or coffered ceilings.

Lathing and Framing
-
Prepare wall and ceiling layouts for drywall or plaster installations.
-
Install metal stud framing, furring, and gypsum lath using hand and power tools.

Cut openings in lath for piping, ducts, and electrical outlets.
-
Install acoustic tiles, hangers for suspended ceilings, and corner beads for plaster finishes.

General Construction Duties

Work at heights on scaffolding, swing stages, or ladders as needed.

Operate CADD and other software systems for project layouts.

Erect and install scaffolding, falsework, and other platforms for construction purposes.
-
Utilize laser alignment systems to ensure precise installations.

Skills and Qualifications

Experience
-
Proven experience in plastering, drywall installation, finishing, and lathing.

Ability to work with both interior and exterior wall and ceiling systems.

Technical Expertise

Proficiency in using hand and power tools for cutting, installing, and finishing drywall and plaster.

Knowledge of surface preparation, compound application, and sanding techniques.
-
Familiarity with acoustical and coffered ceiling systems.

Physical and Interpersonal Skills

Physical stamina and ability to work in physically demanding environments, including handling heavy loads and standing for extended periods.

Attention to detail and commitment to delivering high-quality finishes.

Strong communication and teamwork skills.

Certification

Completion of a three- to four-year apprenticeship program or equivalent work experience.

Trade certifications for plasterers, drywall installers, and lathers are preferred or required depending on the location.

Red Seal certification is an asset.

Preferred Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent.

Experience working at heights or on scaffolding.

Ability to estimate project costs and materials.

Valid driverβs license and ability to travel to job sites.
