72320- Bricklayers

Position Summary:

The Bricklayer is responsible for constructing and repairing walls, foundations, chimneys, and other structures using bricks, concrete blocks, stone, and similar materials. This role involves reading blueprints, measuring and cutting materials, and installing prefabricated masonry units. The Bricklayer plays a vital role in ensuring structural integrity, aesthetic quality, and compliance with safety and building standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Project Execution and Masonry Work

    • Read and interpret blueprints and sketches to calculate material requirements.

    • Prepare and lay bricks, concrete blocks, stone, and structural tiles for walls, foundations, chimneys, fireplaces, patios, and other structures.

    • Construct and install prefabricated masonry units for residential, commercial, and industrial projects.

    • Cut and trim bricks and concrete blocks to specifications using hand and power tools.

    • Lay bricks and stone to provide veneer facing to walls or other surfaces.

    • Build decorative installations such as garden walls and patios.

    • Work at heights on scaffolding or swing stages as needed.

  • Specialized Masonry Applications

    • Lay radial bricks to build industrial chimneys and masonry shells.

    • Install firebricks to line chimneys, smokestacks, and industrial furnaces.

    • Line or reline kilns, boilers, and similar installations using refractory materials.

    • Restore, clean, or paint existing masonry structures as required.

  • Collaboration and Supervision

    • Work collaboratively with other tradespeople, apprentices, and team members to meet project timelines and standards.

    • Instruct apprentices and provide guidance on masonry techniques and safety practices.

  • Tools and Equipment

    • Operate and maintain masonry tools, including trowels, hammers, chisels, and power tools.

    • Use appropriate safety equipment, including steel-toed boots and scaffolding systems.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Experience

    • Proven experience as a Bricklayer, with a strong portfolio of completed projects.

    • Experience in both structural and decorative masonry applications preferred.

  • Technical Expertise

    • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, sketches, and technical specifications.

    • Proficiency in using masonry tools and equipment safely and effectively.

    • Knowledge of building codes, safety regulations, and industry standards.

  • Physical and Interpersonal Skills

    • Physical stamina and ability to handle heavy loads (up to 45 kg or 100 lbs).

    • Capability to work in physically demanding conditions, including standing for extended periods and performing tasks that require bending, crouching, and kneeling.

    • Excellent attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and teamwork abilities.

  • Certification

    • Completion of a three- to four-year apprenticeship program or equivalent work experience in bricklaying.

    • Trade certification for Bricklayers (compulsory in Nova Scotia) or Red Seal certification is an asset.

  • Preferred Qualifications

    • Post-secondary education or training in masonry or a related field.

    • Familiarity with refractory masonry techniques for industrial applications.

    • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation to job sites.
